Let's Talk : Surviving Diploma

Diploma would've sucked without them

I’m officially a Human Capital Management diploma holder ! Qualification isn’t everything, but I have to admit that it does feel amazing to have something to my name.

//   S U R V I V I N G  D I P L O M A  //

  1. Pay attention in class and what the lecturer says. Jot down notes whenever possible, don’t rely on your printed material. It’s not enough.
  2. Also, make it a point to remember the examples your lecturer gives, it’s going to help when you write an exam paper and they see that you actually pay attention haha.
  3. Try not to skip classes unless you’re sure that you’re not going to miss anything important.
  4. Take your assignments seriously. Don’t just do it for the sake of finishing it. Put thought into it, do your research, look up the internet. They carry a big percentage to your overall coursework so you should give your very best effort.
  5. If you don’t know, ask. And I don’t just mean asking your lecturer. Ask your friends ! They’re more than willing to help you understand if you just ask. I am so weak at any subjects that have calculations or numbers, so I make it a point to ask my friends to teach me and alhamdullilah, I managed to do well despite feeling incredibly stupid in class haha.
  6. And this brings me to my next point; If your friends don’t know, you help by teaching them. The more you expain to people, the better you understand. Nobody should be stingy with their knowledge.
  7. Ace your presentations ! Before presenting, make sure you thoroughly understand the topic you’re presenting. Make sure your slides are not lengthy, section them into points and you do the elaborations verbally. DO. NOT. JUST. READ. Try to explain in your own words, and give your own examples.
  8. If no one is taking the lead, you take the lead. In a group assignment, don’t just wait around for somebody to say something if you know that you should start already. You divide the task, ask who wants to do which, compile, submit on the deadline. Don’t wait around. Yes, you are going to look and seem bossy, but that’s just how it has to be. A quote I pretty much live by : Nothing will work unless you do.
  9. To study for exams, memorize the key points, not the explanation. I swear it’ll be so much easier to elaborate if you take the time to understand everything first. Make sure that when they key points are in your head, you already know how to put that explanation on paper. Not memorizing an essay, and then putting it on paper.
  10. This is a random one, but carry an umbrella with you in your backpack. Can't tell you how many times mine has saved me from the rain and heat.
  11. Be everyone’s friend. You don’t necessarily have to talk to everybody, but don’t be a b*tch either. Smile if you catch someone looking your way, compliment if there’s something you like, try to engage in conversation if you have common ground. Don’t just rely on a few people to be friends with. I think the more friends you have in uni, the more enjoyable your whole uni experience will be. Back in my first couple semesters in diploma, I barely had any friends. But now, I have friends from different courses, and different age groups and it’s fun to randomly run into people and say hey how’s it going.
  12. Make use of the resources and the facilities your university provides. The library, for instance. I like my campus library, although I’m only there during exam week haha. My library has this area for individuals who just want their own private space, where it’s super quiet in there and tables have partitions. That’s where you’ll find me ! Also, if your university has database subscriptions where you can find so many journals to do research on – make use of that shit so you don’t have to go through “you’re not allowed access to this journal unless you sign up and pay USD99 a year”, or incomplete PDFs of journals you found on Google/Google Scholar.
  13. Personally, I feel like I’m most productive when I’m doing things alone. Or I can be with people, but I cannot intereact with them unless my work is done. I get easily distracted and I end up talking to them and telling them about things they don’t want to know.. so I’d rather just isolate myself and focus on my work.
  14. The only exception to this is calculation subjects, where it is a lot more helpful when I study in a group because I’m weak af. So find what works for you, if you're better at studying in a group ; do that. If not ; study alone. Don't force yourself.
  15. Look for books online instead of buying them brand new. A long semester in my uni is roughly around 4 months, so to buy a full priced book and just use it for 4 months I feel like is such a waste.. So I always look for second hand options on Carousell. Some people even sell book for less than half the price, you just need to look for them.

Those are the tips I've accumulated throughout my 2+ years of diploma. Hopefully you found at least one thing helpful hahah.
How I study, it’s still pretty much the same as this ; Let’s Talk Studying

I'll end this post with photos from my convocation x

Left a space in the middle for Fikri haha

    1. Surprisingly I don't ! I have final projects every semester but I don't have like a major fyp or internship. My internship duration for degree is 6 months tho - double of what other university students have to do.

    1. Yup, my ex broke up with me A WEEK before spm. We were together for like 2 years+ so I get how down you feel and how difficult the situation may seem right now. If there's any advice I could give to you, is take the break up as a motivation to do better for yourself. Work harder, do better, and make it a point to prove to the world that you're freaking amazinggg. Of course you're going to feel sad and it gets hard to focus, but just surround yourself around people that make you happy so you won't even have much time to think about it. That's what I did and in the end, my spm results were wayyy better than him, and months later I got into a relationship (with my current boyfriend) who makes me so so happy. Everything will work out for you in the end, just be positive okay :) x Btw so flattered I'm your fav blogger !! I love youu !
