Current Skincare Routine

Hi guys ! Apologies for not having this post up sooner, but here it is. My skincare routine.

Before I start, it's important for you to know and remember three things while reading this :
1) My skin type is combination but leaning more towards oily, 2) What works for me may not work for you, everyone's skin is different.
And, 3) Don't take my word for anything, I'm not an expert ! I'm just simply sharing what's been working for my skin.

If you know about The Korean 10-Step Skincare Routine then just know that my skincare routine is based on that, but not all of my products are Korean. My skin was behaving abnormally towards the end of July / early August. I was breaking out on parts of my face that I have never had pimples before, and so that was when my interest in Korean / Asian skincare peaked. I was even more intrigued by it when I saw my best friend Marissa use an oil cleanser at a sleepover - that was sort of the push I needed to try something new.
By the way, if you have dry skin, I highly recommend you read Marissa's skincare routine --> click here.

When I started this skincare routine, my skin was acting up like never before. I had active pimples on the sides of my cheeks, clogged pores on my forehead and chin, and scarring / dark spots of all the old blemishes that I picked on (it's such a bad habit guys, please don't do that) on certain areas of my face. It was baaaaad. I think I've been pretty lucky before this because I never had more than 2 pimples on my face at the same time.. but now that I'm turning 20, my skin is just like 'nope, you gotta take better care of your skin.'

Did some research, and went crazy buying stuff off HERMO. You can get almost all of the products listed in this post on the website (and for cheaper too, cause they always have sales). I'll link all the products below in pink, so just click on their names and it'll lead you right to the specific product page on HERMO ! Anyway, after a month of diligently following the skincare routine I have now, my skin has improved so much from when I first started, that I simply had to make a post about it. My skin is not perfect, and it hasn't reached to a point where I am super, super happy with it yet, but it's getting there !

Morning Routine

Foam cleanser  -->  Moisturise (with SPF)

or

Foam cleanser  -->  Vitamin C serum  -->  Moisturise (with SPF)

Evening Routine

On normal / lazy nights :
Oil cleanser  -->  Foam cleanser  -->  Toner  -->  Essence  -->  Serum

Once a week, usually on Fridays :
Oil cleanser  -->  Foam cleanser  -->  Exfoliate  -->  Toner  -->  Essence  -->  Serum

Twice a week, whenever I have a lot of time :
Oil cleanser  -->  Foam cleanser  -->  Toner  -->  Wash-off Mask  -->  Essence  -->  Serum

EXTRAS :

Whenever I feel like I need to, after my serum I smear on a sleeping mask ;
which is basically a mask / moisturiser that you don't have to wash off until the next morning, or just use a normal sheet mask / wash-off masks.

And whenever I have a pimple, I rub some pimple cream on the pimple(s) or use an acne patch.

PRODUCTS :

1. Oil Based Cleanser / Makeup Remover : Etude House Real Art Perfect Cleansing Oil

I was so scared to try this at first because my skin is already oily as it is, so putting more oil on it seemed like the craziest idea. But the science behind it is, oil can cut through oil, whereas water cannot cut through oil. So what an oil based cleanser does for my already-oily skin is that it actually cleanses it deeper, removing that surface of oily gunk that has accumulated on my face throughout the day, so the other products in the steps after that can penetrate better into my skin. Plus, it's an awesome makeup remover. I don't use makeup wipes at all anymore because this cleanser just melts away everything, including waterproof mascara ! Just one pump is enough for my whole face, and I oil-cleanse every night, even when I'm not wearing any makeup, fyi !

I love this one from Etude House because it has a pump, but after this runs out, I really want to try the Clean It Zero from Banilla Co.
It's a cult favourite and I've read so many good reviews about it.

2. Foaming Cleanser : Simple Kind To Skin Moisturising Facial Wash

If you have been reading my blog for a while now, you would know how I switch up my cleansers every time I finish a bottle. For a couple of years, I go back and forth from Simple, to Eucerin, to Hadalabo, all of the gentle ones that have kept my skin really clear for the most part.

(Story time )

But then one day, a couple months ago, I decided that the cleanser I was currently using (Hadalabo moisturising one, can't remember the name exactly) was too mild for my skin. It wasn't clearing up my clogged pores, which was my main concern at the time, so I went ahead and bought a stronger cleanser from Hada Labo called the AHA/BHA Face Wash.

After a few washes, I started breaking out on my cheeks, which was weird because I never, ever, get pimples on my cheeks. What more like 4 or 5 at once ?! I did some research, and I was convinced that my skin was just 'purging' (skin gets worse before it gets better). So. Naive. Of. Me.

I used the cleanser for a month, and the pimples on my cheeks were still there. One disappears, another one shows up. On and off. Took me a whole freaking month to realise that the cleanser was way too harsh for my skin, and it just wasn't working. I tossed it into the trash without having a backup cleanser to use that night, so I was looking for a temporary alternative in my drawer, and that's when I found a little sample of the Kiehl's cleanser. Used the sample for a couple of days, fell in love but it's so expensive.. Now I'm back to my Simple face wash. It's super  mild so it doesn't irritate my skin.

3. Exfoliator : Skin Food Rice Wash Off Mask

I love this stuff ! It's a super gentle and mild exfoliator - mask, and it leaves my skin feeling extremely soft and smooth after I wash it off. I use this once or twice a week at most, and I leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing it off. My skin reacts pretty badly to physical / harsh exfoliants so I got myself the gentlest one from Skin Food. Highly recommended if you're looking for a mild exfoliant, but if you want something that exfoliates harder, go for the Black Sugar ones !

4. Toner : Simple Kind To Skin Soothing Facial Toner

The only toner I have ever used. I swear by the whole skincare line from Simple, everything from the brand is really gentle and suitable for sensitive skin. Other toners have alcohol in them and I read somewhere that alcohol can irritate skin.. so I just stir away from those. This toner gets the job done ; getting rid of excess dirt that the cleansers might not have picked up.

5. Essence : Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Intensive

Before I started using this one, I was using the Biotherm Life Plankton Essence, although I liked the Biotherm one, it made my skin feels tacky the next morning. Too moisturising, maybe. But with the Missha one, my skin just feels nice and moisturised throughout the night. One thing I've noticed after using this for a few weeks, is that my skin isn't as oily as before. It somehow controls the sebum production on my face, so my pores look and feel smaller, and I don't get oily as quick as I would usually do on my T-Zone.

6. Serum : Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop

If I could pick a favourite in my skincare routine, it would be this. No joke. My pimples tend to leave behind dark marks and pigmentation (mostly because I pick on them and squeeze so hard that blood comes out. Again, DON'T DO THAT. I never learn..), and they usually take months to disappear on their own. But guys, this serum faded my marks so quick, I saw results after a week of applying it day and night ! I just use two / three drops and use my fingers to rub on my troubled areas. Vitamin C (especially those that are highly concentrated), can feel warm and tingly on the skin when you first apply it the first few times, but after a while your skin gets used to it and you won't feel the tingling sensation anymore. I got this when it was on sale for like 70 ringgit on HERMO, still pretty expensive, but so worth it. The bottle and product itself kind of reminds me of the Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution.

7. Moisturiser / SPF : Good Virtues Co. Glowing & Goodness Day Cream w SPF30

This moisturiser sinks in really fast, and it feels nice and lightweight on the skin. I also love that it has SPF30, which is quite high for a moisturiser in that price range. Anddddd, I love that this has a pump ! All the previous moisturisers I had came in tubs that I had to dip my fingers in, and I always thought that that was unhygienic.. sooo this is good. Love this. Love pumps. All moisturisers should come with pumps.

8. Masks

I only use wash-off or sheet masks when I feel like it, usually once a week when I feel like my skin needs some extra lovin'. I really like the Innisfree capsule masks, but The Laneige Water Sleeping Pack is by far my favourite. It's the ultimate lazy person mask and let's be real, I'm a super lazy person. This mask is so easy, because you just put it on like a moisturiser before going to bed, and then go to sleep, and then wash it off when you wake up in the morning.. Voila ! Skin feels nice and plump and hydrated. It has a lovely scent to it too. I use this sparingly because it is quite pricey too, but a small dot is enough to cover my whole face so I have a feeling this tub is going to last me a long time.

Other masks I use :

Innisfree Capsule masks
 - one capsule can last me up to 4-5 uses

Sheet masks, from any brand.
But I currently really like this one : Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Sheet Mask

9. Pimple Cream / Ointment :  Oxy 10

Benzoyl Peroxide in a tube. Have been using this for yearsssss, and it works wonders. If I have a pimple, I usually dot this on my pimple in the morning + before I sleep,
and after a few days, the pimple is almost gone. I personally like Oxy 10, but they have a milder version called Oxy 5.

With oily skin, comes clogged pores = unsightly bumps of white & black heads on my nose. I didn't think anything could help with that until I found this. IT ACTUALLY WORKS. Watch this video and you'll know what I'm talking about and how to use it : review. The first time I used it, I couldn't stop staring at how much gunk it actually pulled out. I've tried several pore strips from Biore, but none of them really did anything and I end up pulling nothing out so it was just a waste of money. But this kit guys, this works. It doesn't remove everything completely, and results aren't permanent. My nose just feels a lot smoother and less bumpier.

If you have enlarged, clogged pores, you should definitely give this a try. Just make sure you follow the steps in the video link I shared, or else it won't work.
I do this once a week, whenever I feel like doing it :)

11. Acne patch : Oxy

After I squeeze a pimple at night and clean it, I put a pimple patch on it and leave it on til the next morning. This patch absorbs all the pus and bacteria, so it doesn't form into a pimple again. In my experience, it only works after I pop a pimple. If the pimple is still under the skin with no opening, it doesn't really do anything.

Other than following this skincare routine, I drink a lot of plain water and I only wear a full face of makeup (foundation, etc) once or twice a week depending on where or what I'm going out for. Most days, I just let my skin breathe, and if I have to, I'll spot-conceal blemishes by using a concealer.

That's it for this skincare post ! If my routine changes, I'll definitely make an updated post in the future, but I'll be sticking to this one for a while. Again, this is just what I personally use on my face and what works for me. All these steps are unnecessary if you already have good skin ! Cleansing, toning, and moisturising should suffice. I've just had problems with mine lately that I added a lot more steps to my routine.

Thanks for reading ! x

  3. Hye Izza, I'm going to finish my studies very soon and I will have about 5 months before pursuing degree. Do you know any kind of job where I can get roughly 2k a month ? Thank you ;)

    1. Hii ! 2k a month is hard to find, because retail / f&B usually pay less than 10 ringgit per hour for part timers and if you work 6 days a week, it'll just total up to around 1600 at most. But if you apply for a full time position in retail (NOT f&b), where you also get commission, then it's possible to get 2k a month. You should go and ask around for vacancies + their pay, and then leave your resume wherever you're interested to work :)

    1. Which one are you using ? The one I tried from Kiehl's was Calendula one, and it's amazing. Definitely gonna purchase that if I have some extra money. Yes, definitely try oil cleansing. It makes such a difference !

  5. Everybody seems to get their hands on Simple Toner. What is so good about it ? I don't wear makeup so do I need it ? Will it helps in shrinking pores w/o drying out my skin ?

    1. It's just a very gentle toner that helps take off any impurities your cleanser might have left behind. If your skin is good as it is by just using a cleanser, I don't think you need a toner. The one from Simple doesn't really shrink pores in my opinion, but it doesn't dry out the skin for sure.

  6. hi for the question to the anonymous above (or below), usually 2k per month has to be Uniqlo. so far they're the highest paying retail store. but the workload is tough and laborious so if you're up for it then you should apply. worth the money i would say :)

    1. Postage is usually RM7 to Semenanjung, and RM10 to Sabah / Sarawak, but this depends on the weight of the item so if it's heavier it might cost more, but that's what people typically charge for Poslaju when they sell items online. After the person dah bank in to your account, you ask for their name / address / contact number. And then you go to the post office, grab a Poslaju form (it's usually on a counter, but if you don't know which one, you can always ask whoever is there), fill in your details and the person's details on the form, and take a picture of the tracking number and send it to the buyer. Then you get a number, wait for your turn, give the person at the counter the book + the form, and they'll put it in a parcel for you and tell you how much you need to pay. That's it ! :)

  9. How to use that capsule mask? Is it good?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The mask has a lotion consistency, so you just grab some on your fingers and spread it around your face like how you would with moisturiser, leave it on for 15 - 20 minutes, and then wash it off ! Yup to me it is, face feels really hydrated after using those :)

  12. Hye Izza, the essence that you use is not available on hermo anymore :( they do have this one -> Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence 150ml [#Intensive Moist] https://www.hermo.my/deals/17034-new-3rd-generation-missha-time-revolution-the-first-treatment-essence-150ml-intensive-moist.html Do you recommend it? We both have the same skin type! Thanks for replying :) p/s: I really wanna try the 3 step blackhead removing mask but it's also unavailable on hermo. Do you know anywhere else I can get it? :D

    1. Hii ! I think the one I have is discontinued and the one you linked me to is the replacement. Pretty sure it's almost the same except that it's new and improved ! But to be safe, wait a couple months and do some research (reviews / YouTube videos) on it to see if it's the same or better than the previous version. And yes you should try the blackhead removing mask, it's sooo good. Omg I'm so sorry the items I listed are not available / out of stock on HERMO D: I think you can try looking for it on Carousell, I've seen a few people sell them there. x

  13. izza, do we need to wash our face after wearing a sheet mask for 10-15 minutes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's up to you ! I read online that you don't have to wash it off and just let everything sink into your skin, but personally I hate the feeling after peeling a sheet mask off (sticky / tacky), so I usually just pat the remaining product on my face for like 15 seconds and then rinse my face with water after that.

  14. Izza! I tried the glowing moisturizer 20 bucks tu, and it works so well! My boyf told me my face is getting flawless hehe. Thank you so much for the recomendation! Anyways, have u tried different product but same brand tu?

    1. Yay ! I'm glad you like it ! Yup, I've tried the facial scrub and the toner. Both of them work really well on my face too, but I have a friend of mine that told me the toner gave her a tingly burning sensation on her face when she used it... So I think it depends on the person and it might not be suitable for everyone. Worth a try though :)

Does etude house cleansing oil suit for dry skin? What's the difference between mild cleansing and oil cleansing moisture? I would like to try double cleansing but I'm not sure which cleansing oil is the best for my dry skin type. Maybe your suggestion can help me. Thank you so much.

    1. Hi ! Yeah I think it does, because my friend Marissa has dry skin and it suits her well too. I'm not so sure about the difference, but all of them should be okay. Just be sure to read the description of the product and reviews to see which one you think is best for you !
