Let's Talk : Studying

Before I ramble on about how I study, I should probably tell you what I study. I'm currently doing my Diploma in Human Capital Management (or also known as Human Resource / HR) and I just started my fifth semester a few weeks ago. The core subjects for my course revolves around the main functions of HR such as ; Recruitment & Selection, Training & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Performance Evaluation, etc. I finish my diploma somewhere next year, so after that I skip to second year degree of the same course. HR wasn't my first choice, I wanted International Relations or law, but fate brought me here anyway haha. But glad to say, I'm doing quite okay now so it's definitely a blessing in disguise. I've had opportunities to interview HR Managers from major companies like Sapura Kencana and Schlumberger in my previous semester, and it was only then that I realise that I actually can see myself doing this in the future haha. The people I got to interview were so cool, they're like laid-back but smart and in control and hearing how they apply the things we learn in real life situations is just.. whoa. I learned that the HR dep. can either make or break a company. Hopefully with this kind of knowledge, I'm able to run my own company someday hahaha.

I never enjoyed learning back when I was in school. Mainly because it was too exam-oriented and a lot of it was just memorisation. I was also damn active in other activities in school except learning. Pencinta Alam, Debate, Drama, Prefect stuff, Sports, Interact Club, you name it. And when I actually do end up in class, my head would be on the table and I'd be sleeping. I was an average student in the last couple years of secondary school, never top 10, but never in the last spots too. Always in the middle. The only subjects that I was always confident getting As for was Science, English and Agama. Other subjects, I only started working on when SPM was getting nearer. Ended up getting 5As (English, Science, Agama, Sejarah, Perdagangan). Aimed for 7 but my BM and Ekonomi Asas ended up being B+ (damn it). I hated subjects with numbers so that's why I didn't aim for straight, I lost hope for Maths and Accounts haha.

What I like about studying in university is that I have to be independent. It's a quality I have been identified with a lot ever since I was very young, so having to be independent in university didn't come as a culture-shock to me. In school, I was forced to copy notes I don't understand, do homework I'm not able to do, and papers were marked strictly based on 'answer schemes'. But in university, the lecturer just lectures in class to make you understand. You do your own notes, you study what you think is important, you're able to answer papers based on understanding (minus calculation subjects), and you're also evaluated based on your performance in class i.e. : presentations and assignments. So how do I study ?

1. Attend Class and Pay Attention

I try not to skip class at all unless I really must. But you know, I'm human too so I do succumb to my skipping desires once in a while.. Like probably skip one day a month hahaha. When I go to class, I usually sit in the first or second row. Fourth row at most (that's when I don't really fancy the subject or the lecturer). Being in front means I'm kind of forced to pay attention no matter what because the lecturer can see everything I do. Sit in front, focus, attempt to listen to everything the lecturer is saying without drifting off to wonderland.
I also try to be punctual to class to avoid missing out on anything important. 10 - 15 minutes late is acceptable still, later than that I think Id rather skip class. It's just me haha.
I don't like being late.

2. Write My Own Notes

My lecturers provide powerpoint lecture slides or as they'd like to call it 'notes' on my university's student portal. They'd typically ask us to print the lecture slides so that we can refer to them as notes, but I never do this. I did that mistake once when I was in my first semester and the notes ended up being a waste of paper + money (I don't have my own printer) to me. So ever since then, I just download and keep them in my laptop and when I'm in class, I'd jot down the important things my lecturer emphasises on during the lecture. When I get home, I refer to the lecture slides and make my own notes for the whole topic. I understand everything a lot better that way.

Oh in case anyone's wondering, I use a multi-subject notebook for every semester. It's easy to have everything with me at all times, and I also don't have to lug around different books to class. I just carry one and it has everything I need inside + my class schedule.

3. Recap What I Have Studied

I forget quite easily, hence I always need to recap what I learned in class. I don't really have a specific time or day to recap, but when I have free time, I usually just go through my notes / lecture slides for like 10 - 15 minutes and find myself going 'Oh, that's what she was talking about !'. I sit in front and pay attention but I get lost in space also hence why I need to recap for every subject lolz.

4. Make Highlighters My Best Friend

I like using highlighters. They make me want to look at my notes more and they also help me with remembering !
Colour helps you remember things better, or at least that what Science says.

5. Solo Studying

Whenever an exam or test approaches, I study alone. Some people do well studying in groups but I really can't. I have to be alone, preferably in my room. I can't concentrate fully with people around and I am easily annoyed so yeah you get the point. Even when we're minutes away from entering the exam hall / room and all my friends are seated together trying to study, I'd be the one sitting in the far end corner talking to myself. I cannot study with people around !

6. Last Minute, But Not Too Last Minute

I procrastinate a lotttttt and no matter how hard I try, I always end up studying last minute and finishing up my assignments last minute. So like if something is due two days from now, I start doing it a bit today and a lot tomorrow. I still need to work on this because I always end up staying up super late to finish everything and the next day I go to class feeling groggy and tired. Not cool. But yeah, I don't do everything last minute. I start a couple / few days before hehe. Not too last minute.

Same goes with studying. I study last minute, but because I do my own notes and I always recap, I don't have to force a lot of things in my head right before the exam. I just try to understand and remember more when the exam is nearing, and I focus on the tips my lecturers give me. I also make simplified notes of what's important on a couple of foolscap sheets, staple them, and read, read, read, understand, test myself.

7. Ask For Help

If I don't understand something, I ask for help. I either ask the lecturer, or I ask my friends to teach me. For my current semester, the most difficult subject I'm facing right now is Economics, but thanks to my friends I'm able to cope since they're always willing to help me.

8. Stay Organised

I use my planner / diary to remember when my due dates are, submissions, tests, exams.
This way I don't have to panic and I can manage my time well. I can't function without my planner.

9. Understand

I study and understand something first, and then I'll try to remember it.
I can't blindly memorise things without understanding it, it becomes difficult !

What's In My Bag ; University Edition.

I've been using the same bag since I was form 3. It's from Fourskin and it used to be this really nice deep navy blue but the colour faded throughout the years and countless of times in the washing machine haha. I really want a new bag, but for now this will do. If you guys have any suggestions on where to get nice but not so expensive backpacks, let me know !

1. Multi-subject notebook.

Got this from HEMA in Paris. But you can pretty much find multi-subject notebooks in any stationery shop, really.

2. Pencil Case.

My mum got this for me from Japan and I love that it has two compartments instead of just one big hole haha. So one side, I keep all of my serious stuff ; scissors, stapler, pens, ruler, eraser. And the other side is where I keep all the fun stuff ; mini ink stamps, coloured markers, and seven different highlighters. Yes, seven.

3. A two-pocket folder.

Irfan got this for me from either Japan or Korea. One side I keep loose sheets of test pad / foolscap paper. And the other side I keep my assignments, fee card, etc.

3. Umbrella

Weather is so damn unpredictable nowadays, and my umbrella has saved me countless of times. Either from the cafe back to campus, or from the campus to my car. I love my umbrella. I have two umbrellas, one plain black one from Uniqlo and another cute polka dotted one Irfan got for me from Japan. I bring the Uniqlo one to class now because I'm scared I might lose the one Irfan got me. So precious, I never want to lose that one !

4. EarPods

Lecturers come in late sometimes, I get annoyed with people other times. Either way, my EarPods are essential for blocking people out haha.

5. My purse

Self-explanatory. My food doesn't pay for itself.

6. Little Pouch

In here is where I keep my lip balm, lipstick, hand sanitiser, emergency pad + panty liners, tissues.

7. My planner / diary

CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS. All my important dates are in there, including my expenditures and to-do lists. I get my yearly planners from Typo.

8. Water Bottle.

I rarely order drinks whenever I go eat, and everyone knows it's because I always have my trusty pink water bottle with me.

9. Powerbank + cable

I only bring this on Thursdays because that's when I have classes from 8 - 6. On other days, my phone battery usually lasts until I get home.

10. Phone

I usually hold my phone or put it in my pocket, but I keep it in my bag too sometimes.

11. Laptop

This is not technically in my bag, because it's in a sleeve and I carry it in my arm. But yeah, I bring my laptop with me to class around 2 to 4 times a week.

Random Questions I Get :

What Do You Usually Wear To Class ?

If I'm not wearing a jubah, I'm most probably wearing jeans and a button up shirt that doesn't need ironing haha. I repeat my outfits way too often and I'm always wearing my black tudung. I also wear either my black H&M slip on sneakers or my Converse or my black jelly sandals. I salute people who put so much effort to looking like a model to go to class haha. I'm too lazy for that and I couldn't care less about how I look going to class. Lol.

Make up routine to class ?

I try to stretch out my sleeping time as much as I can in the morning, so I really have no time to put makeup on even if I wanted to hahaha. I end up jumping out of bed, showering really quick, put on clothes, solat, slap moisturiser on, a bit of lip balm and lipstick, wear my tudung and I run out the door haha.

On days I have a bit of extra time, I might put on a bit of mascara. Or if I have a blemish I don't like, I dab a bit of concealer and set it with powder. My friends are so used to looking at my pale makeup-less face that when I actually do put make up on for events like the Dean's List ceremony, they're like 'whoa you look different'. Lolol.

Do you wear glasses ?

I have glasses, but I only wear them when I'm using my computer at home or studying. Usually when I have to look at the laptop for a long period of time or read a lot, that's when I wear it. My eyes are quite weak in the sense that they get tired easily, so my glasses help me with that. My power is 100 on the right and 75 on the left, glare 50 and 20. So I can still see well without my glasses. My eyes just get tired when I have to focus on something for a while.

That's all I have for this post, but feel free to ask me questions about how I study in the comments below in case I forgot to share anything. Also, do note that how I study might not necessarily work for everybody so you can try and do what I do, but if you study better using different ways / techniques then that's completely okay ! This post is just to break down how I do it haha.

Thank you for reading ! x

  1. Ahh this is so nice Izza! Quick question, do you ever have a hard time when it comes to group assignments? I'm currently studying foundation and its tough i tell ya with people. 1 is getting group mates, 2 is getting the job done. Its so hard for them to do work like so malas tau. So i always end up doing the job and dah la banyak its so stressful. I can almost NEVER depend on them to do the report or slides for presentation because it either won't be to my liking or they buat cincai je. Have you ever experienced these kind of things? Because of my course literally every subject ada group assignments. :'( xx

    1. Thank you ! YES, ALWAYS. I've even fought with friends because of group assignments, it's brutal. We just have to accept the fact that not everyone is like us and not everyone has been brought up the way we were, and that we're meant to lead. That's what my mum always tells me when I complain about group assignments. I always end up having to buat everything also, so I totally know how it feels having to either do everything from scratch or re-do everything cause they don't do it properly ! Sakit hati, but what to do. Takpa, of course you're doing all the work now but in the future I can bet you're going to be the most successful. x

    2. Well i feel a tad bit better now that i know i'm not the only person yang experience this. HAH yang fighting with friends part is the absolute worst!! Elok elok kawan until jadi tak kawan aiyooo i tell you ah. Now what i do to keep going is just reminding myself that in the end its all going to be worth it and that i'm going to benefit from doing all the work and the effort i put into the work. All the best Izza and thank you for taking the time to reply :) xx

  5. okay done reading hahah i am still in school but i have always looked forward to uni. i know it'll be harder but im just like you, i prefer studying my own way like making my own notes and all rather than salin cikgu without even understanding what im copying. i also love my planner omg i feel so weird bila guna planner since im still quite young im not that busy but it keeps me so organised i cant live without it too. even tho i'm still in school (form 4 next year!) i found this really helpful. i really need to focus in class, i get sleepy or bored then I start talking to friends or lose focus. do you have any tips on that? thanks izza (or kak izza) x

    1. Yay ! I had a planner when I was in school also, so don't worry it's not weird at all hahaha. I'm glad you found this post helpful ! I was exactly like you dulu when I was in school, even worse I slept during class itself.. I don't think i'm fit to be giving you tips because I was just so bad haha. But yeah, try bringing candy or something to munch on during class. You won't feel sleepy that way ! Thank you for reading sweetie xx

  8. You are sooo organized I swear! I'm currently halfway with my degree and I think I have to change my ways/drive of studying. I need that motivation back pronto. I was almost on the verge of quitting everything & resort to jual burger tepi jalan lol jk. Maybe organizing myself a bit helps?

    1. Thank youuu ! What are you currently studying ? You only have another half to survive until you graduate, you can do it ! I'm doing my diploma and even I feel like quitting sometimes ok, I feel you hahaha. Being more organised definitely helps ! Good luck xx

    2. I'm currently studying medicine, and I have problems sustaining myself in this field so I took a long break. I had to retake papers and such, it wasn't easy. I'll be resuming my studies next year. Hopefully I can find a new drive this time, as it's a new start. :) Thank you!

  13. Hey Izza, i wanted to ask for your opinion on typo planners. I've always wanted to get one but they're quite pricey kan? Its always RM50 above. I have been using planners but not typo ones. Thought of buying one for 2016 do you think its worth the money? :) x

    1. Hi ! Yup, definitely worth it. I've been using Typo planners for about 4 years now haha. 50 and above but to think of it, if you're like me ; you're going to be using it every single day for a whole year, so it's worth the investment ! x

Mine's baby pink and super worn out and finishing already (since it's dec already). And bruh, I can't live without it too! My memory is so bad I think if I don't write things down I would probably be so lost haha. Love this post!! So fun to read hehe

  15. Hey izza! Just wanted to get your opinion. I am starting college next month and its a whole new experience for me. Kinda have mixed feelings.. I just wanted to know in your opinio which kind of bag is suitable for college? A backpack or a tote bag? If tote bag i wanna get mine at longchamp... since u use longchamp do you have any advice?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hii ! Good luck starting college, it's going to be fun but stressful haha. For my first couple of semesters I carried my Longchamp, but then I needed to bring my laptop la, more books and all, so I ended up carrying a backpack. I only bring my Longchamp when I'm not carrying that many things. I definitely recommend you getting a backpack, it'll be easier to carry than a tote and a lot more comfortable too. Your shoulder is going to hurt if you keep carrying stuff on one shoulder. Backpack all the way !
