DIY Makeup Fix

A few weeks ago, I did a horrible thing while I was doing my make up : I dropped my The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer highlighter on the floor
I picked it up and the powder was smashed into pieces !!! My heart broke along with the product and I was so upset because this is one of my favourite (also, one of the most expensive) items I have in my entire make up collection. I left it broken like that for a couple of weeks because I kind of just gave up on it and was thinking of buying a new one but then I did some research and hey, fixing it isn't as hard or impossible as I thought it would be !

So if you want to know how I fixed it, keep on reading.

What you'll need :

Broken powdered or compact make up (duh)
Methylated Spirit / Rubbing Alcohol / Isopropyl Alcohol
A small sheet of plastic
A small stick to mash the product
A tube or anything with a flat end (preferably with rounded edges too)
Anything flat (ruler / butter knife / your pick)

I forgot to include the small sheet of plastic and ruler in the photo, but other than those things, these are all you need !

The hardest part for me was looking for the rubbing alcohol. In every tutorial I came across on the internet, the instructions were specifically to use rubbing alcohol or better known as Isopropyl alcohol. I looked in 3 different pharmacies (Caring, Watsons and two different Guardians), but all they had were alcohol swabs and not the one that I wanted in liquid form. SIGH. So I tried the Guardian at Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang one day, and they didn't have Isopropyl Alcohol.. but the closest thing I could find was this thing
called 'Methylated Spirit' from Polylab which has 95% of alcohol in it so I grabbed it and prayed it would work anyway haha.
It's RM7.30 per bottle which is not bad of a price at all for a miracle worker.

Now on to my version of the tutorial !

Step 1 :

Take the stick (I used my eyebrow comb haha) and mash the broken make up altogether. Do it slowly to avoid spilling the product all over and just make sure that the bigger pieces are crushed so that all of the product can sit in the case evenly. I know what you're thinking, 'whaaat, this isn't fixing make up, this is practically making it worse ! ' hahaha well yes sort of, but this step is necessary to help bind the product better later so trust me on this !

Step 2 :

Methylated Spirit time ! This part made me feel like a chemist hahaha. So once you're done crushing and making sure everything is kind of flat (don't worry if it's not that flat, we'll get to that later), what you're going to do is pour the methylated spirit in the cap and pour it on the broken product. This depends on how big your compact is, if it's just for a small eyeshadow pot, you don't need so much but since mine is a full size powder I poured about 3 or 4 capfuls. Don't worry if you over did it, because methylated spirit will absorb into the product, bind it together and evaporate. It's like magic.
Let it sit and absorb for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 3 :

Now your broken powdered makeup consistency should be thick and creamy, and this is when we put our Nutella spreading skills into action. Grab your flat ruler / knife / whatever you have (I used a metal ruler), and slowly go over the product (as though you're spreading Nutella on bread) until everything is nice and flat in the container.
Make sure there are no holes or little cracks, just do it until you're happy with the way it looks.

Step 4 :

Take a small sheet of plastic,  (a lot of other tutorials use a kitchen towel but I personally think a sheet of plastic is better since it won't absorb and waste the product as much) and place it over the product. Then, grab your tube with the flat end and rounded edges (I used a tube of Aloe Vera for mine) and press it on top of the plastic that's covering the product.
This will make sure that everything in there is properly flatten out and firm in the compact. It will also get rid of air holes in the product and make it look nicer thanks to the rounded edges of the tube.

Step 5 :

After you're done pressing on the product, it should look something like this.
So now all you have to do is clean up the edges of the compact to neaten it up and leave it to dry over night.
That's it !

End Result :

By the next morning, it should have dried up and the consistency should be back to it's normal powdered form.
And I don't know if it's just me, but the payoff got better after I did this too. It's feels less chalky. Bonus !

So that's it for my DIY Makeup Fix tutorial ! If you have broken make up lying around at home, fix it because it's reaaaallly easy.
If you don't, come back here later if you eventually do break something ( I hope not haha).

Thanks for reading ! x

  3. Hi Izza, I recently read and article about the permissible alcohol that muslims can use and i'm quite sure that methylated spirit isn't permissible :/

    1. Hii ! Alcohol as long as it's not consumed or able to intoxicate, it should be fine. And ethyl alcohol is different from methylated spirit, which is actually denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is an industrial methylated spirit or surgical spirit (contains natural or synthesized ethanol and denaturing agent such as methanol or methylisobutyl ketone). It's permissible for external use. I did my research before I did this, so don't worry ! Thank you so much for your concern though, I appreciate it :)

Haih such a waste lah.

    1. Glad you like the Georgette ! Maybe you should resell your bamboo cotton ? Just post it on Instagram with the hashtag #duckscarvestoletgo. dUCk has a good marketing team, that's why they're able to sell. So yeah, either email them and say you're not happy or resell..

  6. Hi Izza,

Just a random question - What is your take on smoking weed? Are you against it, are you okay with it?

    1. Hi, this is a really good question.

Halal and haram aside (it is clearly haram, but cigarettes are haram too and everyone still smokes). I have friends who smoke weed, and no they're not drug addicts with no direction in life, in fact they're ambitious and a lot of them are really, really smart. Both book smart and street smart (not because of the weed, they just are). I also have friends who have taken weed, but stopped for the reason that they couldn't focus on their lives because that was all they wanted to do. Some people live better with it, some people are better off without and I've seen both sides.

So to me, if you're able to use it responsibly and you don't revolve your life around weed, I'm okay with it. Again, I'm reminding you and everyone who's reading this that I'm not speaking on religious terms, this is just generally what I think of it. But that doesn't mean I'm okay with taking it, or okay with a group of people taking it in front of me. I don't really like how people act when they're high, but this also varies from person to person. I just feel like they're not in their correct, natural state of mind and that makes me feel uncomfortable. All in all you could say I'm mostly okay with it, but I am against it at the same time. Sorry if my answer is a bit confusing and all over the place but I never express out opinions without facts (or in my case stories of my friends) to back it up.

I'd love to know what you think. Thanks for your interesting question ! x
