Let's Talk : Money Makin' Money Savin'

Hi ! With the GST implementation happening and the whole of Malaysia going nuts about taxes, I think it's about time that I finally write a post about how I save up and/or manage my money. This isn't a post for those who are just looking to save money in general, but more to those who aim to reach a certain target to get something (that's usually quite expensive). I am by no means a financial advisor or expert of any sort, (I'm pretty broke most of the time too tbh haha), but when I have my goals set to save up for something, I usually get it. So I thought it'd be helpful to share how since I've gotten quite a few comments on my blog asking me to write a post about this.

BUT. Before I start, I wanna know your opinions about GST. Yay or nay ? Personally, it's a nay for me. I think if the implementation was smoother, and if the reasons behind why GST is implemented were clearer in terms of where the GST money is going specifically and what the money is actually used for, I'd be a little more okay with it. Because what I want, and what I think a lot of other people want as well ; is clarity. If there was clarity in regard to the government's expenditure of the GST collected, then I'd feel more like a citizen helping a developing country rather than a victim paying 6% more for everything. I know 100% transparency is impossible even for the best of governments, but they just need to be extremely clear, yknow ? Clear so we'd understand. There's just a lot of confusion going on still and I wish things were more straightforward with the implementation. I am grateful that there are still items that are free from the additional 6% taxes, like Ron 95 fuel (what I use, thank God), most food items, books, etc. But all in all, I guess it's just bad timing. With the ringgit value going down and the current condition of the Malaysian economy... Sigh. I hope all of this GST shenanigans will help Malaysia in the long run, I really do.

Okay, lol that's enough ranting. Anyway, here are my tips on how you could save up $$$ faster without waiting for raya or your birthday to come rolling around. I personally do all of this as well, so hopefully it'll work out for you too.

1. Get a job

I know this seems like a lot of work and you won't have much time to chill but it really is the fastest way to getting a huge amount of money, quick. I mean where else could you expect to get 1k++ a month if not by working somewhere ? You could work full time, you could work part time. You could babysit, or clean the a house for extra allowance. Whatever it is, get a source of income. Depending on yourself to save up through your allowance is not impossible, but it's going to take a loooooong time until you reach your target. Unless you could actually save up 100% without spending (which I doubt).

2. Sell your things

Spend a day cleaning your room and filtering out what you don't need or use anymore. That old instax camera ? That bag ? That top ? Those phone cases ? Don't use it, sell it. Instagram is usually a good place to start selling 'preloved' items if you're too lazy to venture into other apps, but a couple of good ones to resell your pre loved or brand new items are : Carousell and Duriana. A lot of people I know are starting to use Carousell, but both apps are quite similar. Upload a photo, put a description with the details, and people will message you or 'chat to buy' if they're interested. It's so easy. You can either post the items out or agree to meet somewhere (public, never private. The world is dangerousssss), and do the transaction face to face. Or you could even just sell your things to your best friends if they share similar taste as you.

3. Limit your spendings

If you get your allowance weekly or monthly, (I get mine weekly, I tend to use more of my money if I get my allowance monthly). Try to limit how much you spend in one day. For example if you go out for lunch with your friends, how much should you spend ? Stick to that limit and don't go overboard unless you really need to. I always finish my money on food !! Sad truth. First it's lunch, then I feel like I need a snack like Hot n Roll, next thing you know I'm buying fruits and a waffle.. and at the end of the day I find that I've spent $20 on lunch, only. It's ridiculous. So always have a limit to  how much you want to spend. It doesn't just apply to food, even if you're out on a shopping spree to treat yourself. Limit how much you want to spend. Which brings me to my next point..

4. Prioritise

I know we all have this never-ending list of things we want need like ; a laptop, phone or travel / concert / shopping funds. Make sure you prioritise what you want in order = what you need the most --- what you need the least. You'll have more motivation to save up that way since your goal is a lot clearer. Like for me currently, my ultimate goal is a camera. So I haven't shopped for clothes or makeup or anything in months(!!) to save up. I'm getting extremely close to my goal though, so you have no idea how excited I am right now to reach it haha. Prioritising when you go out to shop also helps, like if you wanna go out shopping for clothes, make sure you already have a clear list of what you actually need. Jeans, this kind of top, socks, wtv. Often when I go out shopping without a specific list, I get so sidetracked and carried away that I end up buying everything else except for what I actually needed in the first place. So I always make a little list in my phone so that I get only the things on the list.

5. Budgeting

When you save up for something it should register in your brain that you need to live life on a budget. Little things like opting for plain water instead of sweet drinks to save a little when you go out to eat can make such a big difference to how much you spend. Allocate the amount of money to save and to spend according to your needs. Always stick to your budget ! This tip goes hand in hand with..

4. Resisting Temptations

Self explanatory but worth mentioning in this post. I'm here to remind you (#notetoself for me also la) to not buy anything you don't need. You don't need that top, you don't need that dUCk scarf, you don't need that MAC lipstick, you don't need a new book that you're not going to read anytime soon. You don't need it. You don't need to go into shops to 'browse' and 'window shop' if you don't wanna spend. Walk away... Just walk away.

5. Keep Track

Write everything you spend / earn / lend. This is so important because how are you going to save money if you don't even know where your money is going and coming from ? Keeping track of your expenses should be a daily thing. And jotting down your income should always be something you do when you get it. At the end of the day, sit down and write in your diary or notebook, everything you've spent / gotten on that day. Even if it's just RM1 on a bottle of mineral water. even if it's just RM10 from your parents to have lunch that day. Write it down so you won't find yourself wondering 'Where did my money go' every time you end up being broke.

6. Keep Your Money

.. somewhere that's hard for you to get it back. In my case, to save up for a camera, I kept the money I saved in a tin that can't be opened unless I use a can opener hahaha. You can make one using like an empty Milo tin or anything tin that can detach the lid, make a little slot to put your money in, and super glue the lid to the tin. Whenever you put in money, make sure you write down the amount somewhere so you won't forget how much is inside. You could keep the money in the bank too like normal people, but if you're like me and you tend to do a lot of online shopping. It could be dangerous. Every time I put money in my bank account, I always feel like I need to spend. SO easy for me to just browse through Fashion Valet and click click click 'add to cart' and just pay through my debit card. And it's so easy for me to just swipe the card whenever I'm out too. Happened way too many times. Way. Too. Many.

Last but not least, when you're almost reaching your target :

7. Look for things online

Nowadays it's so easy to find anything online. If you don't mind buying something that isn't totally brand new, I highly suggest you go on websites like mudah.my or even browse through apps like Carousell to look for what you want. Specifically when it comes to electronics. I've seen a lot of listings for Macbooks and iPhones and cameras online that are slightly cheaper than the original price in stores. But make sure you do a lot of research and when you contact the person selling it, make sure you ask all the important questions like the condition of the thing, what version it is, what comes with it when you buy it from him or her, more photos of the item. Buying things online is a risk, and if you can, agree to meet that person in a mall or anything and sit somewhere so you can inspect the item before paying and taking it home. It's a common thing to be conned into transferring money to a person who ends up being a fraud, so be careful when you online shop. Another tip : When the price seems like it's too good to be true, it most likely is. So survey prices everywhere first. Oh and also, try Lazada to buy gadgets, or Luxola (it's practically like online Sephora haha) for beauty products, they usually have good discounts !

I hope some of you have found this post to be helpful, and if you have other tips of your own, do leave them in the comments too ! I'd love to know and I'm sure anyone who reads it will find it helpful as well. Good luck with saving up ! x

    1. Haha I'm neither ! I think both the government and the opposition each have their pros and cons. With the government now, I know things could be better (corruption still going on, etc) but I am grateful that our country is still peaceful under their control. We don't have to worry about wars or anything like that. I live in Selangor and that means I'm in the state where pakatan rakyat is ruling. No complaints. Plus our water is practically free here, thanks to the subsidy given by them. So yeah.

I'm so scared to turn 21 in a couple of years, cause that means I'm old enough to vote.. yikes. Haha. How about you ? Who do you support ?

    2. For me I think i am more to opponent kot. But idk im only 20 but being 20 doesnt mean I dont see or understand anything about political kan. One thing for sure, so far I tak nampak pun anything beneficial that our pm has contributed to our country. And apa yg I nampak is, mostly teenagers are more into opposition, i mean we can obvs see that from previous election. Hehe how bout ur parents izza? Who do they support? Its ok if you dont wanna tell :)

    3. Oh I seee. Haha yeah, we shouldn't be ignorant about the politics in our country kan. I agree on the teenagers are more on the opposition side tu, cause the previous election ada like a Under21 vote just to see and the opposition won. So we don't know, the future of our country might change sooner than we think. Haha I think i'll keep that one private, I'm sorry !

  5. Idk why but im going to share this with you. Im not from the gov neither opposition side. For me just like what you thinks, both hv good and bad. But let us just look at the positive side instead the negative. Like you know well we need positivity in our life kan. Like for me, I dont insists that our pm is doing his job well but let us just see what the goodness he hv done to us. I mean like those brim thing, the bantuan persekolahan that we used to get once beforw this, boucher buku, and prima house and come to many more. I see this as one of the helpful thing even none of my family take brim and so. Yeah like what you said we just want to know more abt gst. Like where it will go and so. Like what I see from my own eye, if this gst things is not good, he will not be implementing it to our country. Like yesmaybe just bcs it is not the right time since the economic is slowing down and so. I mean like yeah we dont know bcs we dont leave in his shoes and know what he's responsible for. What the civilian want is just clear information abt this right. I kinda agreed that maybe he need to tell us more abt this so that the civilian will not voice out idk it is too early for us to judge abt this thing since it is just been implemented around 3 days. Too early to judge. Maybe the profit and so in long run term. Let us just see. And im not going to say that the opposition is bad like yeah I like the part like they give subsidies to us abt water supply and so. I am thankful for that. Wtv it is just my two sense. Im not the supporters from any side. Im just 19 pun. Hope this will not hurts any side including you. Am sorry if I did. Hv a nice weekend izza :))

    1. I appreciate you sharing your opinion with me ! I like that I'm able to make my blog a platform to voice out and listen to opinions. But yes, I totally agree with you. People have a choice to either embrace and look at the bright side or just hate and condemn for the rest of their lives and we happen to be the ones who look at the positive side. The BRIM thing, and the 1Malaysia kedai that sells things for cheaper. Mhmm, the government wants what's best for the country too because well, they live here jugak, so why implement something if it's not going to benefit us kan ? We just have to wait and see. Definitely too early to judge.

Thank you for taking the time to write this !! Don't worry, everyone's allowed to voice out (on the comments section of my blog at least) haha so it's fine. And noo it didn't hurt my side at all haha. You have a nice weekend tooo ! x

  7. Salam Izza. I've been waiting for this post for few weeks! Glad you finally made it hehe thank you Izza Pizza :) Anyway, I'm planning to buy an iPhone soon. Do you think I should buy it in machines or the apple store in ou or shops in lowyat or just buy it online since online is a looot cheaper?

And this might be random. I noticed you have no pictures on your twitter anymore. How do you deleted all of them? I used an app to delete my tweets but the photos are still there. How do you delete them all? Thank you so much!

P/s: Bought Reclaim Your Heart. Thank you for your suggestion. ❤

    1. Waalaikummusalam. Haha yay !! No problemo. Um it's better if you buy it from physical stores, cause if anything you can just bring it back in for warranty. But nothing wrong with buying online or in low yat too, you can find supeeer good deals but make sure you really check and ask them everything about warranty and all that. Or or, I suggest you get the iphone from your mobile carrier (digi / maxis / etc), but there's going to be a contract though for 2 years. I'm sure you're gonna use the phone 2 years pun so try looking into that :) Cause through maxis / digi ke apa it's usually quite cheaper.

I had to delete the photos one by one ! Haha, cause I used like some random app I found on the internet to delete all of my tweets but the photos were all still there. Had to do it manually unfortunately.

Ahhh tell me what you think of the book when you finish it ! It's so good I swear. Glad you got that one ! x

    1. Hi ! Yeah my Macbook is installed with Microsoft office, but I can't remember how much though D: Nowadays the macbooks come with iWork which basically has Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Which is like the mac version of MS Word, MS Powerpoint and MS Excel. So yeah you don't need to spend on Microsoft Office if you're okay with that.
