Salem !

Salem ! (Hello in Kazakh). I've been following my mum to work in KL these past couple of days, which was a lot of fun for me. My mum is the head of an English language centre for foreign students and this time around, she was given a project to handle about 38 students from Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, Kazakhstan aged between 13 to 16. They're here on a scholarship for an english training program for about two weeks. And I was privileged enough to be able to meet and teach them. Before this, I never gave much thought about Kazakhstan. I mean, I know where it is on the map (right below Russia), but I never really learned about the people there or the country itself. Meeting these guys really exposed me to these things. On the first day I went (Friday), I had to take individual photos of them using my polaroid so that they could paste their photo on the first page of their Malaysian Experience scrap book. And then they were each given a task to draw a timeline of their life on a big sheet of paper and then present it to the class.

Listening to their life stories was interesting, everyone goes through different things and everyone has their own ups and downs. They're not exactly fluent in English, and they have to pause to think of words when they speak but one thing I love is that they're not afraid to make mistakes, and when we correct them they accept and practice it. Every time they speak Kazakh or Russian, Uncle Adrian (one of the teacher's) will ask the class "What time is it ?" and the whole class will go "It's time to daaaance !!" and they have to start dancing as a punishment. Which honestly seemed like a dance party instead haha.

During tea break, some of the girls invited me to sit with them and that's when I really had the opportunity to get to know them and their country. Like Kazakhstan has 4 seasons, and they taught me some words and asked me about my life here in Malaysia. They look a lot more matured than their actual age, and their confidence is extremely admirable. Plus the girls have the most flawless skin man, so jealous !

On Saturday, they had two activities to do. One was fun & games, and the other was debate. I used to debate back in school so my mum made me handle the debates with Uncle Garry and Uncle Michael, while Zicky helped Uncle Adrian in the other class with games.

Debate Prep
I had a lot of fun being the chairperson for the debates, especially for the motions I chose ; Social Networks Are Bad For You and Boys Are Better Than Girls. The latter was especially hilarious, because it was boys against girls and all their points were so so funny, I wish I had recorded them.

I look so pale here

I'm going to be seeing them next week too before they go back to Kazakhstan. I still have classes to go to in Uni (so unfair, all my other friends are on break til next year), so I can only join them on weekends. It's refreshing to be around them. Foreigners, in general. I get to learn new things, and I get new perspectives. I'm lucky to have a mum whose work revolves around these people. I'm not fortunate enough (yet, InsyaAllah) to study in abroad with an international setting, but I am grateful that I can still be exposed to different cultures and meet people from different countries here, through my mum.

Oh, and I finally watched the episode of Raikan Wanita with Vivy Yusof in it ! And it just made me love her more. She's such an inspiration to me, and she really works hard. Ugh she's incredible. Only Vivy can work hard and balance out everything else in her life (like being a mum !) with grace and still manage to walk around with style.

It's been a pretty good week for me, alhamdulillah. But I know tomorrow onwards is gonna be better, one of the reasons being Irfan finally coming home from his family trip to Japan and Korea. Praying for him and his family for a safe flight home. Speaking of which, it's been a pretty tough year for Malaysia. MH370, MH17 and now the flood situation happening on the east cost. Every time I come across photos of the tragedy, I feel like breaking down. Especially the photos of cats trying to survive in the flood, I feel like crying every time I think about it. We're so lucky over here. We can go outside, and stand on solid ground and go on with our lives. While thousands and thousands of people are homeless due to the floods with no food or no way of getting out or being rescued due to the current being so strong. This is happening in our own country ! I hope everyone can do their part in helping these victims, donate what you can. You're saving lives here, you're helping families, you're helping your country. Praying for the safety of everyone affected in the flood-hit, and also the tragedy of the Air Asia plane this morning ; QZ8501.

  2. It's really great that you get to learn new cultures and meet new people. Yeah, pretty sad to hear about all these tragedies. Hopefully He gives them the strength to face the difficulties.
